Katana Akatsuki Tonbo Folded Steel Clay Tempered Blade with Sanbonsugi Hamon | KSA Hua
KSA “Hua” Series Katana – Akatsuki Tonbo | Folded Steel Clay Tempered Blade | Sanbonsugi Hamon | Sashikomi Polish | Black Red-Speckled Saya | Genuine Rayskin | Authentic Kissaki Structure
Akatsuki Tonbo is a katana from the Hua Series, defined by motion, transition, and natural symbolism. Forged from folded steel in traditional Maru-zukuri construction, the blade reveals a refined jihada beneath its surface—an expression of layered steel and controlled craftsmanship. The form remains clean and balanced, offering a composed and responsive handling experience suited for both practice and display.
The blade is clay tempered, presenting a rhythmic Sanbonsugi hamon—a repeating tri-peaked pattern that suggests continuity and measured force. Through a restrained sashikomi-style polish, both hamon and jihada are allowed to emerge naturally, preserving the authenticity of the steel while maintaining a calm and understated visual presence.
The koshirae is centered around a black iron openwork tsuba featuring dragonfly and sun motifs, symbolizing forward movement, awareness, and vitality. The fuchi and kashira, crafted from white copper, are decorated with flowing karakusa scroll motifs, representing growth and continuity across generations. A brass habaki secures the blade firmly while adding a subtle warmth to the darker mountings.
The tsuka features deep brown ito wrapped over genuine white samegawa, creating a warm and grounded contrast with a secure and tactile grip. The saya is finished in a black lacquer with red speckled pattern, evoking embers scattered in the dark—subtle yet dynamic. A matching deep brown sageo completes the mounting, maintaining cohesion and balance throughout.
Akatsuki Tonbo is not a blade of excess ornamentation. It is defined by rhythm, symbolism, and quiet motion—an expression of awareness and continuity, crafted for practitioners and collectors who value natural themes, refined structure, and enduring presence.
